Artist Statement

“My life comes full circle as I transform my love of nature into art. I’m awakening my spiritual connection to nature through the luminous qualities of soft pastel to create landscape, floral and abstract paintings. Every painting is a reflection of a life moment and a remembrance of that feeling. Flowers, landscapes, trees and water have shaped my path through life. My artistic journey began in early childhood, drawing & painting in all different styles and mediums. After choosing a career in music as a flutist, composer and recording artist, I later became a landscape designer, author of two gardening books and owner of a botanical garden/organic perennial nursery. Studying with world renown soft pastel artists has brought me full circle to follow my dream of sharing the ethereal beauty of nature through my art.

Lorraine Roberts is an award-winning Canadian soft pastel artist that has been juried into exhibitions across Canada, USA and Europe. Notable awards include First Place at the Federation of Canadian Artists Toronto Chapter’s Spring Kaleidoscope Exhibition (2024) Calm After the Storm, Top 100 Finalist in the PleinAir Salon Art Competition in 2024, for Calm After the Storm, Top 100 Finalist in the PleinAir Salon Art Competition in 2025, for Interconnected, and multiple Awards in other international competitions. Honourable Mention Awards for the paintings: Entryway to Spring, Time Stands Still, Entrance to Spring (sold), Garden in Paradise (sold), Approaching Winter at the Pond, Brambles at the Pond, The Winter Garden, On the Beach, The Light Within (sold), Wishing You Were Here (sold), and My Backyard.

Lorraine is a juried member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and a juried Member of The Pastel Society of America. She is a Signature Member of the Pastel Artists of Canada.

Her soft pastel paintings balance realism with impressionistic freedom by celebrating gardens, landscapes, skies, shorelines, seascapes, and intimate floral portraits with layered and expressive mark-making. Each composition feels alive, as though the viewer has stepped into a suspended moment—one that exists beyond words.

Working with confidence and sensitivity, Lorraine builds depth through layered applications of pastel pigment and subtle tonal transitions. Transparency meets density. Soft passages contrast with bold gestures.

What sets Lorraine Roberts apart is her ability to translate nature’s subtleties into visual poetry. Light is never incidental in her work—it drifts, glows, and settles across the paper with intention.
